What Is Frequency?

Frequency is the number of times something repeats in a certain amount of time. It is commonly used to describe waves, vibrations, and repeating motions, such as sound waves, light waves, and electrical signals.

A higher frequency means more cycles happen each second, while a lower frequency means fewer cycles happen each second. Frequency affects many things we experience every day, including the pitch of a sound, the color of light, and how radio, television, and wireless signals work.

There are many different types of pressure, including fluid and liquid pressure, vapor and gas pressure, stagnation pressure, surface pressure, and negative pressure.

Frequency Formula

Frequency can be most simply described by the formula:

𝑓 = 1 / T

Where:
𝑓 = frequency
T = time period

The formula states that the frequency 𝑓 is equal to 1 divided by the time period T. Learn more on our period to frequency calculator.

You can also calculate frequency given wavelength and wave velocity:

𝑓 = 𝑣 / λ

Where:
𝑓 = frequency
λ = wavelength
𝑣 = wave velocity
