A meter is a unit used to measure length.
The meter, or metre, is the SI base unit for length in the metric system. Meters can be abbreviated as m; for example, 1 meter can be written as 1 m.
Background and Origin
The meter was originally defined as 1/10,000,000 the distance from the equator to the North Pole. The original definition was adopted by the French in 1793.
Due to the irregularity of the Earth making this definition inaccurate and the difficulty in measuring the meter, the prototype metre bar was created as a reference dimension in the late 18th century. It was discovered that the original prototype bar was inaccurate, and was later recreated nearly 100 years later in the late 19th century.
It wasn't until 1983 that the meter was redefined in terms of the speed of light in a set time interval which replaced the use of the physical artifact to define its true length.
How Long Is a Meter?
According to the most recent 2019 definition, the meter is defined as the distance traveled by light in vacuum during a time interval with a duration of 1/299,792,458 of a second.[1] One meter is equal to 100 centimeters, 3.28084 feet, or 39.37 inches.
