How to Convert Distance to Steps

Runner passing the first mile marker

The number of steps required to walk a mile or kilometer can be estimated in a few simple steps.

First, the length of the person’s stride needs to be calculated. Second, the distance needs to be converted to the same measurement as the stride length. Finally, the total distance needs to be divided by that stride length to calculate the number of steps required.

Step One: Find the Stride Length

The stride length is equal to the person’s height multiplied by 0.43.

stride = height × .43

Step Two: Convert the Distance Measurement

The next step is to convert the distance measurement to the same unit used for the stride length. If the person’s height was measured in inches, for instance, then the stride length will also be in inches.

Thus, the total distance traveled will also need to be converted to inches in order to effectively calculate the number of steps. There are 63,360 inches in a mile, so to convert, simply multiply the number of miles traveled by 63,360.

Step Three: Calculate the Steps

Once armed with the stride length and distance traveled in the same unit of measure, finding the steps required to walk the distance can be done by using the following equation.

steps = distance ÷ stride

Thus, the number of steps required is equal to the distance divided by the stride length.
