How to Convert Milliseconds to Seconds

Calendars document the days in a month

To convert a millisecond measurement to a second measurement, divide the time by the conversion ratio. One second is equal to 1,000 milliseconds, so use this simple formula to convert:

seconds = milliseconds ÷ 1,000

The time in seconds is equal to the milliseconds divided by 1,000.

For example, here's how to convert 5,000 milliseconds to seconds using the formula above.
5,000 ms = (5,000 ÷ 1,000) = 5 sec

Milliseconds and seconds are both units used to measure time. Keep reading to learn more about each unit of measure.

Milliseconds

The millisecond is a multiple of the second, which is the SI base unit for time. In the metric system, "milli" is the prefix for 10-3. Milliseconds can be abbreviated as ms, for example 1 millisecond can be written as 1 ms.

Seconds

The second has historically been defined as 1/60 of a minute or 1/86,400 of a day. According the to SI definition, the second is the duration of 9,192,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the unperturbed ground state of the caesium 133 atom.[1]

The second is the SI base unit for time in the metric system. Seconds can be abbreviated as sec, for example 1 second can be written as 1 sec.
