How to Convert Uncooked Rice to Cooked Rice
As rice cooks, it absorbs water and expands, so it can be tricky to figure out how much you’ll end up with after cooking.
As a general rule of thumb, 1 cup of uncooked rice produces about 3 cups of cooked rice.[1] So, can multiply the amount of uncooked rice by 3 to estimate the amount of cooked rice it will make.
Uncooked to Cooked Rice Formula
The basic formula for converting uncooked rice to cooked rice is:
Cooked Rice = Uncooked Rice × 3
Thus, the amount of cooked rice is equal to the amount of uncooked rice times 3.
For example, if you cook 2 cups of uncooked rice:
2 cups × 3 = 6 cups
Therefore, 2 cups of rice will yield 6 cups after cooking.
Rice Type Matters
It’s important to note that the exact yield can vary depending on the type of rice, cooking method, and amount of water used. Long-grain white rice typically expands to about three times its original volume, while other varieties, such as brown rice, basmati, jasmine, or wild rice, may have different yields.
