How to Calculate Minutes Between Times

There are a few ways you can calculate the number of minutes between two times. The easiest way is to use our minutes calculator above or our time duration calculator.

There are also a few ways to figure the minutes between times by hand.

Method One: Minutes After Midnight

The first method to calculate the minutes between two times is to convert both of the times to the number of minutes after midnight, then subtract one from the other.

You’ll need both times in 24-hour time; you can use our 24-hour time converter if needed.

Next, convert the hour portion of each time to minutes by multiplying by 60. You can also use our hours to minutes converter to do this.

Then, add the minute portion of the time to the converted minutes.

Example:

3:20 ⇒ (3 × 60) + 20 = 200 minutes
4:05 ⇒ (4 × 60) + 5 = 245 minutes

You can use our time to minutes calculator to simplify this.

Finally, subtract the smaller time in minutes from the larger one to find the minutes between them.

Example:

245 – 200 = 45 minutes

Method Two: Crossing the Hour

The second method is to count the number of minutes to the nearest hour for each time, then count the hours between them and multiply that by 60.

This method is helpful when the two times are in different hours, and you want a more visual, step-by-step way to find the minutes between them without converting everything into total minutes. Instead of using a formula, you break the time span into smaller, easier pieces. This approach is especially useful for students who like to think about time as it passes on a clock.

First, count the minutes from the starting time up to the next whole hour. For example, if you start at 1:50, you count how many minutes it takes to reach 2:00.

Since there are 10 minutes between 1:50 and 2:00, that part of the time is 10 minutes. This step helps you “reset” the clock at the top of the hour, which makes the next step simpler.

Next, count the minutes from that whole hour to the ending time. Continuing the example, from 2:00 to 2:15 is 15 minutes. Once you have both parts, add them together.

In this case, 10 minutes plus 15 minutes equals 25 minutes total.
