What Is a Mho?

A mho is a unit used to measure electrical conductance.

Mhos can be abbreviated as ; for example, 1 mho can be written as 1 ℧.

Background and Origin

The mho originated in the late 1800s, when it was suggested for use by Lord Kelvin. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the mho is now an unacceptable unit for use with other SI units and its use should be avoided.[1]

How Much Is a Mho?

The mho is a unit of electrical conductance and is the reciprocal of the resistance in ohms, and is actually ohm spelled backwards. One mho is equal to one siemens, which is the SI derived unit of conductance.

How to Convert Mhos

To convert mhos to another unit of electrical conductance, you need to multiply the value by a conversion factor. A conversion factor is a numerical value used to change the units of a measurement without changing the value.[2]

You can find the conversion factors for mhos in the conversion table below.

Then, multiply the electrical conductance measurement by the conversion factor to find the equivalent value in the desired unit of measurement.

mhos × conversion factor = result

You can also use a calculator, such as one of the converters below, for the conversion.
