What Is a Pascal?

A pascal is a unit used to measure pressure.

The pascal is the SI derived unit for pressure in the metric system. Pascals can be abbreviated as Pa; for example, 1 pascal can be written as 1 Pa.

Pascals can be expressed using the formula:
1 Pa = 1 N / m2

Pressure in pascals is equal to the force in newtons divided by the area in square meters.

Background and Origin

The pascal was adopted for use in 1971 as the SI unit of pressure. The pascal is named for French physicist Blaise Pascal to celebrate his work in hydrodynamics and hydrostatics.

Uses

The pascal and its multiples are used to measure pressure in medical, engineering, science, geology, and meteorology fields. While the US has not largely adopted the pascal since imperial and US customary units are preferred, the unit is widely used throughout the world.

How Much Is a Pascal?

The pascal is defined as the pressure of one newton per square meter.

How to Convert Pascals

To convert pascals to another unit of pressure, you need to multiply the value by a conversion factor. A conversion factor is a numerical value used to change the units of a measurement without changing the value.[1]

You can find the conversion factors for pascals in the conversion table below.

Then, multiply the pressure measurement by the conversion factor to find the equivalent value in the desired unit of measurement.

pascals × conversion factor = result

You can also use a calculator, such as one of the converters below, for the conversion.
